What in the World is Going On?
The North and the South 'Face-off'
Daniel 11:40 - 45
Da 11:36 “Then the king shall do according to his own will: he shall exalt and magnify himself above every god, shall speak blasphemies against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the wrath has been accomplished; for what has been determined shall be done. 37 “He shall regard neither the God of his fathers nor the desire of women, nor regard any god; for he shall exalt himself above them all. 38 “But in their place he shall honor a god of fortresses; and a god which his fathers did not know he shall honor with gold and silver, with precious stones and pleasant things. 39 “Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which he shall acknowledge, and advance its glory; and he shall cause them to rule over many, and divide the land for gain.
We have already addressed most of this in a previous study.
Verse 36 is talking about the northern king. He has already had two battles with the king of the south. Because of peace-talks that were just a farce, the northern king did not have the success he wanted in the second battle, so as he retreats back to his home-base he does two things.
First he acquires additional armed support. I believe this is where the 'ten kings' of Revelation comes in. “The ten horns which you saw are ten kings who have received no kingdom as yet, but they receive authority for one hour as kings with the beast. Re 17:12
And second he pollutes the temple. He actually sits in the temple and claims that there is no god besides him. He recognizes raw power or force as his God. And he sees himself as being that force.
We note that he has no regard for the desire of women. This either means (a) that he is a homo-sexual, or (b) it means that he has no regard for the Messiah. There is a long standing tradition amongst Jewish women that each young woman has the desire to be the virgin to conceive the messiah. And since the Jews do not recognize Jesus as the Messiah, Jewish mothers continue to offer this hope to their daughters, even in this present day. So to a Jewish young woman, 'the Desire of Women' means the Messiah.
We already know Anti-Christ has no regard for God. But it would not surprise me if this phrase actually means that he is homo-sexual. Since he is anti-God in every respect, for him to be homo-sexual is logical to me.
In verse 39 it said, “Thus he shall act against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god,
So far the strongest opposing fortress has been the king of the south. So by shear force the northern king proceeds to rule over many. He is now 'king of the world'. The king of the south is still functioning, but there is no mention of his opposing the king of the north for the next few years.
The last phrase is likely talking about finance and the economy. He will 'divide the land for gain'.
In revelation we read that one of the first things the beast will do, will be to eliminate all buying and selling unless a person takes the 'mark of the beast' in his right hand or in his forehead. This will certainly make if difficult for all those who refuse the mark. Also required, besides receiving the mark, is worship of the beast. Refusing to worship the beast is even worse than refusing the mark. This what John writes:
He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name. Re 13:15 -17
Now the 'face-off' ...
40 “At the time of the end the king of the South shall attack him; and the king of the North shall come against him like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through. 41 “He shall also enter the Glorious Land, and many countries shall be overthrown; but these shall escape from his hand: Edom, Moab, and the prominent people of Ammon. 42 “He shall stretch out his hand against the countries, and the land of Egypt shall not escape. 43 “He shall have power over the treasures of gold and silver, and over all the precious things of Egypt; also the Libyans and Ethiopians shall follow at his heels.
The king of the South makes the first move. Obviously he thinks he can 'do it'. I would think that he too, has rallied as much support as possible. He is hurting from the fact that he has lost any semblance of allegiance with Israel. He does not like the direction the economy is taking … the king of the North is in control of everything. The king of the North has 'divided the land for gain'. Whose gain? Certainly not gain for the king of the south.
This battle is described in the book of Revelation. But first, let's remember that Daniel says that the king of South makes the first move. He attacks. But like a whirlwind the king of the North responds. The king of the North devastates the land. At what point in the tribulation period? “At the time of the end”
Let's read how John puts it in the Revelation.
Remember, the whole Bible is God's word, even though human hands did the writing. Based on the fact that the Bible does not contradict itself, all of the scriptures, taken together, form a complete picture.
Let me list some key facts from Daniel that we want to look for in the Revelation.
Daniel tells us of a very powerful, miracle working King of the North.
Daniel points out that this evil king has nations (allies) who support him.
Daniel mentions a very powerful King of the South who opposes the king of the North.
Daniel mentions that the king of the North will totally annihilate the king of the South … at the end of the seven years.
Here is how it looks in the Revelation.
A powerful seven headed beast appears – the seven heads are seven kings – five in the past have already disappeared by the time John wrote this … one existed in John's day, and two more were to come … here is the verse:
Re 17:10 They are also seven kings. Five have fallen, one is, the other has not yet come; but when he does come, he must remain for a little while. 11 The beast who once was, and now is not, is an eighth king. He belongs to the seven and is going to his destruction.
John, in the Revelation describes this seventh/eighth king as a world power. John mentions another smaller beast that is called the False Prophet, but these both are on the same team. This same beast has 10 horns which are referred to as kings. These also are all on the same team.
Re 17:12 "The ten horns you saw are ten kings who have not yet received a kingdom, but who for one hour will receive authority as kings along with the beast.
Together these comprise a great dominating force. They represent Daniel's 'king of the north'.
So how does John describe Daniel's king of the south? At first glance the king of the south and his armies and allies seem to be missing. But if we look at Daniel's words, “At the time of the end”, and then compare that with the very end of the tribulation in Revelation, we should be able to find a conflict between the beast and someone else. If we find 'someone else', that someone else would be the king of the south that Daniel talks about.
Rev 17:3 So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.
Similar to what we did in Daniel, let's examine the participants or the main characters of the tribulation as recorded in the revelation.
We have seen that the beast with seven head and ten horns, accompanied by the small beast (false prophet) represent a dominating force that will have world-wide effect. John goes so far as to say that the entire world will worship the beast. But Daniel pointed out so clearly that the 'world-dominating' king of the north has an enemy. The enemy was called a 'stronghold'.
Now, here in the Revelation we look for a stronghold that the beast has to deal with. And here it is: It is the woman riding on his back.
John is using word pictures to describe world powers. In this picture, as we read about this woman, perhaps various ideas come to our minds. We might wonder, what is she doing up there on the back of this beast ... showing off? Just going along for the ride? Or something more?
I suggest that she has some kind of control over the beast. Why would I think this? Here is a verse that should give us a clue: And the ten horns you saw on the beast will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire. Re 17:16
If the woman was a part of the beast/system ...if she was in favor of everything that the beast was involved in …. why would the beast (ten horns actually) have any reason to hate her?
Whatever the case, we have just identified an action similar to what we read in Daniel. There we read …. At the time of the end the king of the south pushes … or initiates an attack against the king of the north. The end result is that the king of the north comes against the king of the south like a whirlwind.
That is also what we see in the Revelation. At the time of the end the woman on the back of the beast must do something to really irritate the beast and it throws her to the ground and totally destroys her. So the woman is the king of the south.
Let's see what we can discover about this woman.
She sits upon many waters – Her influence is international
Re 17:15 Then the angel said to me, "The waters you saw, where the prostitute sits, are peoples, multitudes, nations and languages.
She has influenced, actually controlled, all of the kings, all over the earth.
Re 17:18 The woman you saw is the great city that rules over the kings of the earth." She rules over the beast.
The economies of the nations were affected by her.
Re 17:2 With her the kings of the earth committed adultery and the inhabitants of the earth were intoxicated with the wine of her adulteries."
When she 'went down' the world-wide economy is affected.
Re 18:9 ¶ "When the kings of the earth who committed adultery with her and shared her luxury see the smoke of her burning, they will weep and mourn over her. ...
Re 18:11 "The merchants of the earth will weep and mourn over her because no-one buys their cargoes any more--
In one hour such great wealth has been brought to ruin!’ "Every sea captain, and all who travel by ship, the sailors, and all who earn their living from the sea, will stand far off. When they see the smoke of her burning, they will exclaim, ‘Was there ever a city like this great city?’ Re 18:17-18
This 'woman' rules over the kings of the earth. We don't want to miss this statement. This woman rules over the kings on whose back she is riding. In Revelation we can read about a mark that the beast forces people to take if they want to buy or sell. This sounds like some kind of a common world currency. But who really controls the money? The beast has enforced a system but does not hold the purse strings. Everything about the woman riding on the back of the beast … controlling, ruling … has to do with the economy. Kings weep when they see her burning. That is, all of the kings except the ten horns. They are the ones who did it.
This city influences the economy -globally. There is only one such city in the world (at this time).

The international bankers who are located in NY are lenders and financiers - globally. Countries that have debt owe money to whoever it was they borrowed it from. In some cases governments owe it to their own citizens. That is, they issue government bonds. People buy the bonds. The money the people used to buy the bonds goes to the government. The government promises to pay it back with interest. Meanwhile the government is using the money to operate and fund the cost of running a country. But this represents a relatively small percentage of a country's debt. Most of the debt is to central banks. And by the way, the Federal reserve is not federal.
In 1903 Banker’s Trust was set up by the Eight Families. Benjamin Strong of Banker’s Trust was the first Governor of the New York Federal Reserve Bank. The 1913 creation of the Fed fused the power of the Eight Families to the military and diplomatic might of the US government.1
The beast comes to the point where it no longer can tolerate the (economic?) control. When it totally destroys the city, the world economy grinds to a halt.
Let's read again about this event:
Daniel says: 11:40 “At the time of the end the king of the South (the woman) shall attack him (the king of the north); and the king of the North shall come against him (the king of the south) like a whirlwind, with chariots, horsemen, and with many ships; and he shall enter the countries, overwhelm them, and pass through.
44 “But news from the east and the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many.
All the actions of the king of the North that are mentioned in these verses comprise a description of that last world war, the third one of the tribulation including the part about the news from the east … the north-east. But he has not destroyed anyone in the north-east yet.
The king of the north feels like a victor. He has finally gotten rid of the king of the south. Little does he know that he is actually being controlled by God
.Re 17:16 And the ten horns you saw on the beast will hate the prostitute. They will bring her to ruin and leave her naked; they will eat her flesh and burn her with fire. 17 For God has put it into their hearts to accomplish his purpose by agreeing to give the beast their power to rule, until God’s words are fulfilled.
The destruction of the prostitute/city/controller of the world is really an act of God. This event is God's wrath. It is bowl number 7 that is 'poured out' onto the earth.
The beast has no idea that it was God Who put the thought into his head to completely annihilate the prostitute (King of the South).
And he also has no idea what happened just before this. The beast likely noticed that the Euphrates river dried up. But with so many devastating things happening all over the world during the tribulation, he probably thought ...What next!
Little did he know that God was planning something else.
Let's read about it in the Revelation. What we are reading now takes place just before the king of the north faces off with the king of the south.
Re 16:12 ¶ The sixth angel poured out his bowl on the great river Euphrates, and its water was dried up, to prepare the way for the kings from the east.Re 16:13 And I saw, coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs.Re 16:14 For they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.
According to this verse the kings of the east are on their way to Israel.
The Euphrates river is dried up … and it is for the purpose of travel. One can only guess what may have happened to air travel and technology by now. Two huge world wars at the beginning of the tribulation has likely destroyed much of it. The kings of the east are going to travel on a dry river bed.
But, as I said, this initiative is not entirely their own. Something is calling them, pulling them to travel to Israel to battle against the anti-christ.
Here is some good news, no believers will be here to see this happen. The very next verse says:
Re 16:15 ("Behold, I am coming like a thief! Blessed is the one who stays awake, keeping his garments on, that he may not go about naked and be seen exposed!")
So believers are about to be 'raptured' at any moment!
Re 16:16 And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.
... The kings of the east are on the way to Israel … While they are traveling God pours out bowl number7
At that very moment trumpet 7 blasts and all believers, dead and alive are brought face to face with our Redeemer!
