Resurrection Sunday - He Lives!
Study No. 31 Chapter 20
We will begin this study by reading a portion of the full account as recorded in all of the gospels.
A short synopsis of this chapter:
Mary (and other women) visits the tomb before daylight
Is surprised or shocked to find the tomb empty
Finds Peter and John (still dark? Probably not) and the three of them return to the tomb.
They arrive and look into the tomb, and see … (must be some light)
Peter and John go to their own homes
Mary remains at the tomb
Goes back to the entrance and, looking in, sees two angels
After a short conversation with them, still weeping she turns at the sound of a voice, asking her a question.
A silhouetted figure stands before her in the entrance to the tomb.
At the sound of her name she recognises Jesus and throws her arms around him.
Jesus gives her two instructions
Do not cling to me, I must be going … now.
Tell the disciples that (John 20:17) … “I am ascending to My Father and your Father, and [to] My God and your God.”
Mt 27:52 And the graves were opened (3 days prior during the time Jesus was on the cross); and many bodies of the saints which slept arose, (53) And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.
Jesus ascends to the Father, taking – not only these believers, but also all the believers who had been residing in Paradise, also called Abraham’s bosom (Luke 16) and took them all to heaven, now that indeed all of their sins were paid for on Calvary. Eph 4:8 Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, And gave gifts to men."
Later in the afternoon – Luke 24:13-32
Walking to Emmaus – about 7 miles.
Breaking bread
A hurried trip back to Jerusalem – about 7 miles. Lu 24:33 So they rose up that very hour and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven and those who were with them gathered together, 34 saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!"
35 And they told about the things that had happened on the road, and how He was known to them in the breaking of bread.
(It is now evening … about 5:30 pm?)
36 ¶ Now as they said these things, … John 20:19 the same day at evening, being the first [day] of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and said to them, “Peace be with you”.
John 20:19 – 20 What happened as Jesus meets with the ten apostles (and others)?
He gives evidence of His identity and of having risen from the dead.
He commissions them … “as My Father has sent me, so …”
He transferred to them the Holy Spirit.
He affirmed them that the work they would be doing is sanctioned by God in Heaven. Having the authority of heaven is very serious.
Mt 18:17 "And if he refuses to hear them, tell [it] to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.:18 "Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
The reason for the Gospel … and all of the signs
Jesus uses Thomas as a contrast to all who would later believe.
