Subjecting Islam and the Qur'an to the Light of Scripture
Session Three
In session one we did a bit of an overview of the history of Islam, its origin and growth. In session two we looked at the Qur'an. Muhammad treated it as an update and correction of the old and new testaments, and a current look at what Allah wanted people to know and to do.
We mentioned that God's word, the Bible, is a 'closed revelation' in the sense that it is complete, and no further written scripture will be forthcoming. We modify this understanding with the acknowledgement and appreciation of the fact that God is very much alive and leads us today.
I may have left you with the impression that, because 'partial gifts' have been superseded by that which is complete, that spiritual gifts, in total, have all been done away. That is not the correct impression to leave you with. The church's power lies in the receiving of the Holy Spirit. Without the Spirit we are left orphans and powerless. The gifts of the Spirit are as real and alive today as they were when they were given ... but the qualifier, as I see it, is that the gifts are each given for a purpose. If the purpose, or need for the gift is still present, so is the gift. Where the need or purpose for the gift lessens or diminishes, so does the gift. That is to say, the gift does not need to remain just for 'display' purposes. Nor is a gift ever given for self edification. It is always given to benefit the church, not the person. Each gift was an 'empowerment' to assist the church in being an evangelistic tool in the hands of God. The list of spiritual gifts in Romans chapter 12:6-9, written a quite a few years later than the First Corinthians 12-14 list, is very current. Every single one of those gifts is still essential for the church to fulfill its mission in the world today. These are the gifts that the 'underground' church relied on while having to exist and evangelize in secret during the 'dark ages' of Roman Catholic domination.
We stated in the last session that, while we have none of the original manuscripts of the Bible, we have thousands of very old copies and that the accuracy is 99.5%. The finding of the recent Dead Sea Scrolls revealed copies of scriptures older than any that we had access to up to that point. Again, there were no signs of modification or corruption.
In addition I want to remind us that our bibles were written over a period of 1500 years by some 40 different writers. Peter said,
2Pe 1:16 ¶ We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eye-witnesses of his majesty.
17 For he received honour and glory from God the Father when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased."
18 We ourselves heard this voice that came from heaven when we were with him on the sacred mountain.
19 ¶ And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.20 Above all, you must understand that no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation.
21 For prophecy never had its origin in the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.
This is what we refer to as Divine Inspiration of Scripture. Inerrant. Without contradiction. Uncorrupted and unchanging ... yet alive. New for today. Cutting edge! The two-sided sword of the Spirit.
The Qur'an, on the other hand, was written by only one person. There are no other witnesses. And the Qur'an, itself, says that if we doubt Allah's word, that we have the witnesses of the Old and New Testaments. But when we compare the Qur'an to the bible, it comes out contradictory. Bring that to a Muslim's attention and they say that the bible is corrupted. So, that brings us back to the first point, they have no witnesses other than Muhammad, who was left to recite whatever he wanted and make it suit himself, which is exactly what he did throughout the book.
David Wood1 refers to this as 'Convenient Revelation'. That is, a revelation from Allah that just happens to come at a time when it suits a particular need for Muhammad, himself.
Example 1. Muhammad's 'free time'. Muhammad, as you might imagine, was busy establishing the new religion and gathered a number of followers who admired him so much that they seemed to hang around for long hours and even late into the evening. He could have set a few ground rules. But perhaps he is too 'shy'. At any rate, one day Allah helps him out by giving him a scripture.
“ O Ye who believe! Enter not the dwellings of the Prophet for a meal without waiting for the proper time, unless permission be granted you. But if ye are invited, enter, and, when your meal is ended, then disperse. Linger not for conversation. Lo! that would cause annoyance to the Prophet, and he would be shy of (asking) you (to go); but Allah is not shy of the truth. And when ye ask of them (the wives of the Prophet) anything, ask it of them from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not for you to cause annoyance to the messenger of Allah, nor that ye should ever marry his wives after him. Lo! that in Allah's sight would be an enormity.” Qur'an 33:53
Does this sound like anything you have ever read in scripture, where the writer is benefited, just because he is becoming annoyed?
Example 2. Muhammad 'fell in love' with his adopted son's wife.
The story goes that he saw her with very little clothing, she was beautiful, but she was married to his adopted son. The son, Zaid, senses Muhammad's affection toward his wife, comes to see him to discuss divorcing his wife so that Muhammad could marry her. Muhammad apparently has 'a revelation from Allah' which said that Muhammad was going to end up marrying her ... but due to his 'shyness' or so that he would look more pure, he says, No, keep your wife. Zaid divorces her anyway. Muhammad marries her ... and the community is shocked and calls it incest. Then, conveniently he suddenly gets this new verse which clears him of any wrong doing:
Behold! Thou didst say to one who had received the grace of Allah and thy favour: "Retain thou (in wedlock) thy wife, and fear Allah." But thou didst hide in thy heart that which Allah was about to make manifest: thou didst fear the people, but it is more fitting that thou shouldst fear Allah. Then when Zaid had dissolved (his marriage) with her, with the necessary (formality), We joined her in marriage to thee: in order that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the Believers in (the matter of) marriage with the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have dissolved with the necessary (formality) (their marriage) with them. And Allah's command must be fulfilled.
-- Sura 33:37
So not only has Allah COMMANDED him to marry his son's wife, (who can go against Allah!) but Muhammad says there was another reason that he had to marry her ... to show by example that there is nothing wrong with it. This would benefit the whole congregation. Later Muhammad receives another revelation stating that adoption is wrong, discontinue the practice ... and so he dissolves that adoption of his son.
Example 3. What to do with a wife to whom you are no longer attracted ... does Allah COMMAND that you treat them equally in every way?
“Sawdah (A wife who was getting older and rather heavy) feared that the Messenger of Allah might divorce her and she said, `O Messenger of Allah! Do not divorce me; give my day to Aisha.’ And he did, and later on Allah sent down this ayah 4:128. Ibn `Abbas said, “Whatever (legal agreement) the spouses mutually agree to is allowed.”.
Example 4: What do you do when you get caught having sexual relations with someone other than your wives?
“O Prophet, why do you prohibit yourself from what Allah has made lawful for you, seeking the approval of your wives? And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.” Qur'an 66:1 (-12)
Muhammad's wives had to take revolving "turns" to be with their husband. Muhammad ignored his 2own system and had sexual relations with Mary the Copt (his slave girl) on a day that was either Hafsah's or Aishah's "turn". Hafsah discovered Muhammad's breach of protocol and became upset. Muhammad promised her that he would not have sexual relations with Mary, probably out of fear that Hafsah would tell his favorite wife, Aishah - whom he married when she was a child of about 9 years of age.
Hafsah and Aishah were, according to the traditions, often competitors for Muhammad's attention, and Hafsah told Aishah the entire sordid story. We can only imagine the anger of Aishah and the other wives of Muhammad. In retaliation, Muhammad boycotted the other wives, in respect to his sexual relations with them, and co-habitated exclusively with Mary. After one month, we are told by the traditions and the Qur'an that Almighty God intervened on Muhammad's behalf.
If we believe the testimony of the Qur'an, God tells Muhammad that it is acceptable for him to break his own oaths! Imagine Almighty God promoting and commending a breach of an oath made by Muhammad, especially under such circumstances as the satisfaction of Muhammad's carnal desires!
But wait, things become much worse! God warns Muhammad's wives against conspiring against the "Prophet". If they do not heed this warning, they will face Almighty God, the Archangel Gabriel and all of the angels, as well as all of the righteous. What chance would these poor women have against such opposition?
Another threat against the wives of Muhammad is that Almighty God, in complete disregard to His revelations in earlier scriptures against divorce, will permit Muhammad to divorce his wives AND find prettier wives for him! But the intimidation does not end with the threats of divorce! God threatens the wives of Muhammad AND their families with the eternal fires of Hell!
There are other examples, but at this point we will move on to shine the marvelous light of God's Word on some samples of the Qur'an and see a startling contrast with scripture.
1. Husbands relating to their wives:
Bible: Eph 5:28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
:33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
Qur'an: "Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great." Qur'an 4:34
2. Prescription for stealing
Mt 5:29 "If your right eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you; for it is more profitable for you that one of your members perish, than for your whole body to be cast into hell.
Did Jesus promote dis-dismemberment or is this verse best understood in light of further explanation in scripture?
Bible: Eph 4:28 Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.
Qur'an: As for the thief, both male and female, cut off their hands. It is the reward of their own deeds, an exemplary punishment from Allah. Allah is Mighty, Wise." Qur'an 5:38
3. One man – one woman.
Bible: Mt 19:5 ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?
1Ti 3:2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, of good behavior, hospitable, able to teach;
Qur'an: If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, Marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice. Qur'an 4:3
4. Equality in Christ.
Bible: Ga 3:28 There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
Qur'an 2:282: "O you who believe! when you deal with each other in contracting a debt for a fixed time, then write it down; and let a scribe write it down between you with fairness; and the scribe should not refuse to write as Allah has taught him, so he should write; and let him who owes the debt dictate, and he should be careful of (his duty to) Allah, his Lord, and not diminish anything from it; but if he who owes the debt is unsound in understanding, or weak, or (if) he is not able to dictate himself, let his guardian dictate with fairness; and call in to witness from among your men two witnesses; but if there are not two men, then one man and two women from among those whom you choose to be witnesses, so that if one of the two errs, the second of the two may remind the other; and the witnesses should not refuse when they are summoned; and be not averse to writing it (whether it is) small or large, with the time of its falling due; this is more equitable in the sight of Allah and assures greater accuracy in testimony, and the nearest (way) that you may not entertain doubts (afterwards), except when it is ready merchandise which you give and take among yourselves from hand to hand, then there is no blame on you in not writing it down; and have witnesses when you barter with one another, and let no harm be done to the scribe or to the witness; and if you do (it) then surely it will be a transgression in you, and be careful of (your duty) to Allah, Allah teaches you, and Allah knows all things."
5. Bearing Arms
Bible: Romans 12:21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
1Pe 2:22 "Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth"; :23 who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously;
Lu 9:54 And when His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them, just as Elijah did?" 55 But He turned and rebuked them, and said, "You do not know what manner of spirit you are of.
2Co 10:4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds,
Eph 6:12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.
Qur'an 2:190: And fight in the Way of Allah those who fight you, but transgress not the limits. Truly, Allah likes not the transgressors.
191. And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out. And Al-Fitnah is worse than killing. And fight not with them at Al-Masjid-al-Haram (the sanctuary at Makkah), unless they (first) fight you there. But if they attack you, then kill them. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
192. But if they cease, then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
These are just a few of the glaring contrasts of God's word with the Qur'an. I trust they will serve to turn our hearts to the Light.
Ephesians 5:13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light.
Psalm 19:8 The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart; The commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes;
Psalm 119:105 ¶ Your word is a lamp to my feet And a light to my path.
John 8:12 ¶ Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."
John 12:46 "I have come as a light into the world, that whoever believes in Me should not abide in darkness.
