The Lord’s Prayer
Study No. 27 Chapter 17 -
Twelve men, students in the seminary of Jesus Christ … eleven actually, have accompanied Jesus these three and a half years. They have seen and heard many things. At times they seem to be ‘getting it’ … but at other times? Like only a five hours earlier … arguing about who would be number one next to Jesus in the kingdom.
Jesus must leave soon. He has trained them by teaching them, showing them by example, using many illustrations etc. But in this, His final evening with them, He gives His last minute instructions.
John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
What things? I have picked a few of the ‘things’ which Jesus has just spoken to them.
Lu 22:18 "for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes."
Lu 22:24 Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest.
John 13:4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel round his waist. :5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped round him.
:12 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. "Do you understand what I have done for you?" he asked them.

Mt 26:26 ¶ While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body."
John 13:33 "Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you… (34) "A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
John 14:1 ¶ "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. (2) "In My Father’s house are many mansions; if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
John 14:26 "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.
John 14:30 I will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me, (31) but the world must learn that I love the Father and that I do exactly what my Father has commanded me. "Come now; let us leave.
Mt 26:30 When they had sung a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.
John 15:1 ¶ "I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser.
John 16:33 "These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world."
John 17:1 ¶ Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven,
Now, in the still of the night on ‘the mount of Olives’ Jesus offers the tenderest of all prayers. He first prays for Himself before praying for His apostles and then for believers world-wide.
“Father, the hour has come.” This hour has been alluded to as ‘not yet come’, and then ‘is at hand’, but now it has come.
“Glorify Your Son.” Nothing would glorify Him more than for the world see that He is indeed the very Son of God from Heaven. Rising from the dead would be that ultimate proof.
“Your Son may glorify You” The Father is glorified as the Son gives eternal life to persons.
“This is eternal life …” not “Taking in knowledge of You” – as in the New World Translation, but rather, ‘Get to know’. This first refers to an ongoing process while the latter is knowledge which leads to a decision.
(9) Jesus prays for the apostles.
In the world they will come face to face with the evil one, but the devil OUTSIDE of the church cannot destroy it. (15)
(11) “I am no longer in the world …,” He says this as if it were a present fact … his foreknowledge, His power, His authority over death makes this statement ‘as good as done’.
(12) “I have lost none” and we include John 6:37 "All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. But we are to ‘abide in Him.’ (15:4-7)
(17) “Sanctify them” Sanctify= ‘set apart’
by Your Truth. Your Word. A ‘set-apart’ Christian is one who is different from his surrounding company. Jesus’ prayer is not that we should seek the latest trends in order to appeal to the world. We are ‘light’ the world is ‘dark’. We must seek to keep it that way. ‘A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid.’
(18) “I also have sent them into the world” He has not yet given ‘the Great commission’.
(19) Jesus ‘sanctifies Himself’. Sets Himself apart to a special role as our overseer.
(20) Jesus prays for all believers. The ‘unity’ which Jesus prayed for has been felt by many. When meeting a believer for the first time many of us have literally ‘felt’ a kinship, a sense of family. That being said, there has been an horrendous amount of division within the body of Christ down through the years. Beginning in Corinth and resulting in denominational ‘wars’ are a sad commentary on our unwillingness to let the true spirit of Christ control us.
(23) The world would have a far greater witness if the church were REALLY one. The UNITY of the church will occur during the time of suffering and tribulation that will come upon this earth. Da 11:35 Some of the wise will stumble, so that they may be refined, purified and made spotless until the time of the end, for it will still come at the appointed time.
(24-26) Jesus here mentions the love and glory which He experienced before even the world was made. We cannot possibly grasp what that existence is like. The apostle Paul tells us this. (2 Cor. 12:2-4) We sense a longing in the words of Jesus. John 14:28 ¶ Ye have heard how I said unto you, I go away, and come again unto you. If ye loved me, ye would rejoice, because I said, I go unto the Father: for my Father is greater than I.
1Jo 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is.
Col 3:3 For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
1Jo 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.
