How Bad Can it Get?
Study No. 26 - Chapter 16 -
I must leave you. Your life is in me. Your survival depends upon your abiding in Me.
The world has hated me, it will hate you
I will not leave you powerless, I will send the Helper.
Verse 1: The advice I am now giving you will prevent you from falling away when things get rough.
How bad can (will) it get?
They will put you out of their synagogues
They will kill you.
Verse 2
Ac 14:(1) ¶ Now it happened in Iconium that they went together to the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke that a great multitude both of the Jews and of the Greeks believed.

(5) And when a violent attempt was made by both the Gentiles and Jews, with their rulers, to abuse and stone them, (6) they became aware of it and fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia, and to the surrounding region.
The word synagogue occurs 19 times in the book of Acts. Most of them record the apostle Paul using them as a place to meet with and evangelize the Jews and most resulted in Paul’s being thrown out and persecuted.
Verse 3 Because you are attached to me, committed to preaching the kingdom of God, you will suffer because of it. It is because the ‘religious’ leaders do not know God or Me.
I am telling you these things now because I am leaving.
I must leave.
The Helper must come.
The Helper will
1. convict the world of sin
2. Of righteousness
3. of Judgment.
1. How will the Holy Spirit convict the world of sin?
Heb 4:12 For the word of God [is] living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.
John 15:26 ¶ "But when the Helper comes, whom I shall send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of Me.
Eph 6:17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God;
2Pe 1:21 for prophecy never came by the will of man, but holy men of God spoke [as they were] moved by the Holy Spirit.
The principal or main sin committed by the world is that of not believing in Jesus.
2. Of Righteousness. Mainly the righteousness of Christ, His holiness. This brings awareness of sins of omission. How far are we away from holiness? How holy is Christ? Jesus’ ascension to the Father would be evidence of His holiness/innocence.
3. of Judgment – Commission of sin (especially the sin of Christ rejection) will be judged. Sins of omission (failing in our mandate to be holy as He is holy)
1Pe 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
Jas 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do [it], to him it is sin.
And because Satan was judged on the cross (John 12:31 Now is the judgment of this world: now shall the prince of this world be cast out.)
The Helper will also
Guide into truth
Faithfully repeat what God is saying
Tell things to come
Glorify Christ. (14)
Verse 15 – the Trinity
Jesus speaks in a riddle
(20) They would weep at the cross and at the tomb
John 20:20 When He had said this, He showed them His hands and His side. Then the disciples were glad when they saw the Lord. Their sorrow was turned to joy.
The ‘doorway to heaven’. (23 – 27)
Heb 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
(27) The Father Himself ‘is your friend’ (or likes you) because you have ‘liked’ me.
The disciples finally understand …
Peace … in the midst of tribulation. (28 – 33)
